The Bishop will not allow Islamic prayer in the building
There were disturbances outside the Córdoba Mosque on Wednesday when a group of 100 Muslims arrived to pray together. Although still referred to as the Mosque, the building is now the city’s Cathedral, and in 2006 the Bishop of Córdoba rejected a request from the Islamic community to allow Islamic prayer inside.
There were scuffles as the 100 people entered using tourist tickets, and then organized themselves ‘by walkie-talkie’.
Wednesday night’s attempts to pray by the Austrian group coincided with the passage of one of the Catholic processions, and in scuffles two arrests were made, for the making of threats in one case, and attempted homicide in another, as one security guard and a policeman were injured in the clashes. The security guard then called the National Police to the scene.
The Bishop of Córodba, Monseñor Asenjo has said allowing Islamic worship in the Mosque would ‘generate confusion’ and lead to ‘religious indifference’. The Bishop went on to say the Christian roots in Córdoba deserve to be respected, and under these, the Catholics can live in peace with the believers of other faiths. He said that Wednesday’s events were a ‘calculated manoeuvre’.

Bob, I wish it were not the case. Maybe we all need a little time, to relax and reconsider. My priority is what works and a readiness to discard what doesn't. Lets find what unites us instead of what divides.I pray for a fair future for all and hope that we can move beyond the political parameters we argue within now. Sincere best wishes to all on this thread.

It is worth pointing out that there is a perfectly good mosque in Cordoba at the Plaza de Colon. Any Muslims wishing to pray can
easily find it. It is not forbidden.

Yes it was a church but the land was bought by Abdal-Rahman who commenced building the mosque in 785 AD. I had the same
problem with the 'Cardinal's guards' on 5th March 2010
